Review by Rhys Cox

The album Suite No 2 Op4 Rumanian Folk Dances Transylvanian Dances Hungarian Sketches by Bartók Béla Budapest Symphony Orchestra Conducted By Miklós Erdélyi is a mesmerizing musical journey that showcases the beauty and complexity of Eastern European folk music. The orchestra's performance is masterful, with each instrument contributing to the rich tapestry of sound.

The album opens with the Suite No 2 Op4, which consists of six movements that are based on traditional Romanian folk dances. The orchestra captures the rhythmic and melodic nuances of each dance, transporting the listener to a lively village celebration. The Transylvanian Dances that follow are equally captivating, with their haunting melodies and intricate rhythms.

The album's highlight is undoubtedly the Hungarian Sketches, a suite of five movements that showcase Bartók's genius for blending folk music with classical forms. Born: 1881-03-25 (Nagyszentmiklós, Magyar Királyság). Died: September 26, 1945 (New York, New York, United States). Béla Viktor János Bartók was a Hungarian composer, pianist, ethnomusicologist and collector of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk music (born 25/03/1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, today Sânnicolau Mare, Romania - died 25/09/1945 in New York, U.S.A). He is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century; his vast production reveals a daring and restless harmonic instinct that is affected by his passionate studies on Hungarian folk songs. Typical elements of Béla Bartók style (derived from Hungarian, Transylvanian and Romanian folklore) consists in the use of irregular rhythms and a clear preference for obsessive rhythms. His compositions have sonorities, sometimes abstract, but often harsh, rough and barbaric. Married to the pianist . His 2nd son, became a recording engineer.

Haven't herd this one, love it
Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist?
I played these dances in a college string orchestra. Couldn't remember the opus name and was confused because of two parts named Medvetanc, one of whose is here and the other one belongs to Romanian dolk dances. Now I know exactly what we played that time!

From about 1:05-1:41, it's like listening to a Scots bagpipe drone....astonishing how seemingly antithetical cultures' folk musics really can possess more underlying similarities than differences! Bartok's arrangement is pure magic!
Excellent. For those interested in other performances of these folksy sketches, I highly recommend the one played by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Fritz Reiner, Bartok's younger classmate at the Budapest Academy and loyal friend and interpreter of the Hungarian master. (Available on RCA Victor, Living Stereo series; the remastered CD also includes Bartok's other masterpieces: "Concerto for Orchestra" as well as "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta")

These Sketches were some of my earliest experiences of Bartok. Originally for piano, the orchestrations, idyllic and also dramatic, add a lovely range of colour. "Melody" is particularly haunting....
