The album features some of the best jazz and swing music of the era, and showcases the incredible talent of both Herman and his band members.

A selection of musicians from and , which first originated shortly in 1938 for some recording. In 1946 it was built by musicians of the first Herd. The Woodchoppers were a parallel band project not directly bound to the Herds and mainly put together for recording purposes.
The Woodchoppers were a similar project as the earlier and were simply a generic name for any small band within the Woody Herman band organization.
