Review by P. Maria Galloway

Tongångarne's latest album, Aber Doch, is a captivating collection of traditional Swedish folk songs. The group's unique sound, which blends the traditional fiddle and accordion with modern electronic beats, creates a dynamic and lively atmosphere that is sure to get listeners moving.

The album opens with the upbeat and catchy "Koppången," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The lively fiddle playing and driving beat make it impossible not to tap your feet and bob your head along with the music.

Throughout the album, Tongångarne showcases their skill and versatility as musicians. "Långdans från Tännäs" is a beautiful, slower-paced tune that highlights the group's ability to create a haunting and emotive atmosphere with their music.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Värmlandsvisan," which features a guest appearance by Swedish singer-songwriter Lisa Ekdahl. Her smooth and soulful voice blends perfectly with the group's instrumentation, creating a beautiful and moving performance.

Notes

  • Recorded in Göteborg, November 1986.
  • Note the erroneous songwriting credit for A2, "Blåsa Skåp". The cut is a parody of "Barnatro", which is not in fact traditional, but written by Ejnar Westling (1896–1961). The copyright belongs to the Salvation Army. The band was threatened with a lawsuit by a Swedish rights organization over this unauthorized recording of the song. The settlement of 10 000 SEK was large enough to obliterate the proceeds of the record sales. (Source: Kristian Wedel, "Nästan som en riktig orkester" (ISBN 91 630 6640 8), p.117.

About Tongångarne

A student orchestra active in Gothenburg, Sweden since 1962. Their first two decades were marked by an eclectic mix of classical music, jazz and marches, performed with great technical skill and in odd arrangements. In the late 1970's the band's lineup changed into a big band, and the musical style changed accordingly to be more focused on big band jazz with a large helping of pop, soul and disco. The late records are mostly original tunes, while the earlier ones are mostly elaborate arrangements of classical "hits". Since the nineties the band have billed themselves as a "show band". Tongångarne is a member orchestra in the federation of Swedish student orchestras, Riks-SMASK.
