American soul group, originally from the Detroit, MI area, associated with the soul sound in the 1960s, as well as 's Philadelphia soul sound in the 1970s. Original members: Bobby Smith, George Dixon, Billy Henderson, Henry Fambrough, Pervis Jackson. The group formed in the early 1960s, releasing their earliest singles on 's Detroit-based Records. The group then signed with records, releasing a string of singles from 1964-1971, culminating with the Stevie Wonder penned "" which was released on 's subsidiary. In the early 1970s, Motown dropped the group, and they signed with , who released another run of singles. The most successful was which reached #2 on the Billboard charts in 1976, as well as which hit #4 in 1973. Both were produced by . Their biggest hit came in 1980 with the , which reached #2 on the Billboard charts in 1980, and was produced, arranged, conducted by . For UK releases the group was billed as "The Detroit Spinners" and "The Motown Spinners" to avoid confusion with the British folk group .{;}A Liverpool-based folk quartet, formed in 1958: The original line up of Tony Davis, Mick Groves, Cliff Hall and Hugh Jones was augmented by other short lived members including Jacqueline MacDonald who went on to form Their first TV appearance was in 1960 and they also had their own BBC1 show in the 1960s that ran for many years. They have guested with Nana Mouskouri, Morecambe & Wise and Harry Secombe among others. Not to be confused with the legendary Motown soul group (aka The Detroit Spinners).
