The Kingston Trio - Bad Manss Blunder

Review by Sr Lisa Marie Doty

The Kingston Trio's album, Bad Manss Blunder, is a classic folk music masterpiece that showcases the band's exceptional musical skills and storytelling abilities. With its upbeat melodies and introspective lyrics, this album is a must-listen for any folk music lover.

The album's title track, "Bad Manss Blunder," is a standout with its catchy chorus and vivid storytelling. The song tells the story of a man who commits a crime and is forced to flee to Mexico to avoid punishment. The trio's harmonies are impeccable, and the instrumentation perfectly complements the lyrics.

Another standout track is "The Mountains of Mourne," a traditional Irish tune that the trio puts their unique spin on. The song's melancholic melody and lyrics about homesickness and longing for one's homeland are beautifully rendered by the trio's harmonies and acoustic guitar.

US folk group formed in 1957. Disbanded in 1967. Bob Shane revived the group in 1969 (the only original member at the time). Nick Reynolds, another of the originals, re-joined from 1988 to 1999. Having gone through many iterations the group is still performing, though none of the original members are in the line-up as they have all passed on. Following a relicensing of the name in 2017, the continuity members of the band (George Grove, Bill Zorn and Rick Dougherty) were replaced by a new lineup including Josh Reynolds (son of original member Nick Reynolds) and his cousin Mike Marvin, along with Tim Gorelangton. In 2018 Reynolds was replaced by Bob Haworth and later Don Marovich.

Kingston’s trio
Lead singer on this song is Nick Reynolds. Always liked this one!
This tune is from when Dave Guard was still with the KT but you're showing a photo with John Stewart
Arthur Barrow bring anyone else here?
i just don't like that guy in back ground says waa' waa'
an absolute classic!!
Maybe one of the original "cop killer" tunes
RIP BOB SHANE
Well I didn't have a key and I didn't have a file
Naturally I stayed around until my trial
hahahaha
Reminds me of a song Johnny Cash sang at Folsom Prison called Cocaine Blues
This is more gangster than gangster rap.
Bob Marley didn't get the deputy, because the Kingston Trio got him first.
The song this album was off of is so good
recorded because the writer was friend and really ill. needed the money
Good Lord, they were great!!
Has anyone noticed that the first line of this tune is nearly identical to The Purple People Eater? I never noticed things like this back when it came out.
"It was a sultry day.“

I love this song.
Is this the song that gave Eric Clapton the idea for "I shot the Sheriff, but I did not shoot the Deputy" ??? I see parallels...Sorry slo-hand... now I know! ;-)
"All I ever did was shoot the deputy down." Seriously? You say that's all you ever did? That's not exactly a small thing. Then again the title is "Bad Man's Blunder" so maybe to him it is a small thing.
I've had this song in my head for about 50 years! Thanks for posting with the lyrics.
Fun fact:
In 1999, a psychologist presented these lyrics to two different groups -- one of 'em was told it was a "folk song."
The other was told they were lyrics from a "rap song."
I'm sure it will come as a total shock that the group that thought they were "rap lyrics" had a much more negative reaction.
But hey -- we got a Black President (half-Black, anyway), so obviously, there's no racism left. We're all "post-racial" now -- if you think somebody's being racist, well that's just you going all PC, and being a divisive "race hustler." You're the REAL racist, see.
Must be some other explanation for those results.
Got it for Christmas among others way back when.

This song is kind of terrifying, if you think about it.
One my favorites on this album. Too many of the others are sad: hid out in the Everglades all that time and he wasn't even being sought by the law, the Irish boy....
Always liked this tune!
A Cisco Houston's song. Great.
I remember this from my childhood. Great song.
I absolutely love this song, one of the funniest I've ever heard!
