Review by Mary Gharibyan

"There Came A Lion" is an impressive album by the American rock band Ivoryline, released in 2008. The album features a perfect blend of melodic rock and emo-pop, showcasing the band's exceptional songwriting skills and musicianship.

The album opens with the fast-paced, guitar-driven track "Days End," setting the tone for the rest of the album. The lead singer, Jeremy Gray's powerful vocals, perfectly complement the band's tight instrumental arrangements. The album's standout track is "Be Still and Breathe," a slow-burning ballad that showcases Gray's impressive range and emotional depth.

The album's lyrics are introspective and reflect on themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. The band's ability to weave personal experiences into their music is commendable and adds a layer of authenticity to their sound.

Comments

Discovered this band when they were touring with Madina Lake in 2010. The song "Remind Me I'm Alive" stuck with me most after seeing them, and I was definitely interested in hearing this album in it's entirety. I was a teen back then, and it pretty much hit the mark on everything else Pop-Punk I was listening to at the time. After several listens since, I also consider "Parade", "Bravery", "Hearts and Minds" as top tracks, and I think "Remind Me I'm Alive" is still my favorite from the band all together. Now at (presently) 27 years old, I still enjoy this album a lot, but not sure I would as much if I didn't have nostalgic feelings attached to it. Instrumentally, it's certainly enjoyable if you like the Pop-Punk sound. All the members are talented, but it's mostly typical of the genre. Jeremy Gray's smooth higher-register vocals is the highlight of the album in my personal opinion. Lyrically however, I really can only give average praise as (not all, but a majority of) the lyrics are pretty simplistic and sometimes break the fourth wall. (Ex. "I hope that all of the pride that you've felt will melt away with this pre-chorus / This song's in a format so I know that you can wrap your head 'round it" - And the Truth Will End This) Overall, a bit on the simplistic side, but that's not always a bad thing. All the elements you'd expect from an Indie Pop-Punk band are here, but there's also some beautiful elements that made Ivoryline and their music unique. I think this album is certainly worth a listen or a few. ;)
