John Williams - Family Plot

Review by T.Jay Rocket

The album Family Plot by John Williams is a masterpiece of orchestral music. The composer's ability to create a musical narrative that reflects the emotions and themes of the film is astounding. Each track is a beautifully crafted piece of music that stands on its own, but when combined with the visuals of the film, it becomes an immersive experience.

The album starts with the main theme, which sets the tone for the rest of the album. It is a haunting melody that is both ominous and beautiful. The use of strings and woodwinds creates a sense of tension that builds throughout the track. The other tracks on the album are equally impressive, with each one adding to the overall narrative of the film.

The use of different instruments throughout the album is impressive. The composer uses everything from strings and woodwinds to brass and percussion to create a rich and complex sound. The music is both dramatic and emotional, with moments of quiet reflection and explosive action.

Genius....He was the last true composer in Hollywood...Nowadays they have only untrained hacks as Zimmer, using only three chords...
Fun and provocative!
Williams doing Morricone
Sorry, but Bernard Herrmann should have lived long enough to do one last picture for Hitchcock, in spite of their later differences.
Oh *well*.....
Not a score I am familiar with. It's quite a good one, however.
Hearing a lot of elements of Close Encounters. It's fantastic.
By 'soppy' I simply meant relative to that sinister, chilly (though rapturous) stuff Hermann wrote for Hitchcock. Williams was often at his most brilliant in the 70s - breadth of the material he was writing from the spare (Images) to the Wagnerian (Star Wars) to the jazz/funky (Cinderella Liberty) to the conceptual (The Long Goodbye)...fantastic!
Brilliant!
Outside the circle of aficionados, this is is such a 'forgotten" (but not forgettable!) score. I find myself always saying, "Oh, yeah...that's what he was doing between 'Jaws and "Star Wars' (along with 'The Eiger Sanction', 'Midway', & 'Black Sunday').

As for the music - yes, soppy, but I think the intention is to go for the comic tone of Coward's "Blithe Spirit". Why try for Hermann anyway? Risky. Choices are choices. If one listens to 'Images', parts of "None But the Brave" and 'The Fury', Williams is fully capable of creepier, chillier score.
a thing of beauty
