Blackfield - Welcome to my DNA

Review by James Duffell

Welcome to my DNA, the third studio album by Blackfield, is a captivating and introspective work of art. The brainchild of Israeli rock musician Aviv Geffen and British musician and producer Steven Wilson, the album features ten tracks that are a blend of progressive rock, alternative rock, and pop.

The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful "Glass House," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The track features Geffen's emotive vocals and Wilson's intricate guitar work, and it builds to a powerful crescendo that leaves the listener wanting more.

Other standout tracks on the album include "Go to Hell," a catchy rock anthem with a memorable chorus, and "Waving," a poignant ballad that showcases Geffen's songwriting prowess. "DNA" is another standout track, with its driving beat and infectious melody.

About Blackfield

Collaboratory musical group between and . Blackfield temporarily became Geffen-led with Wilson taking a more passive role for "Blackfield IV" (2013), with his involvement as a contributor rather than a member. But Wilson resumed a full partnership with Geffen on Blackfield V (2016). Band members are drummer Tomer Z, bassist Seffy Efrati, and keyboardist Eran Mitelman. Former band members include Chris Maitland (replaced by Tomer Z, 2004) and Daniel Salomon (replaced by Eran Mitelman, 2007).

Comments

"Welcome to My D.N.A." is the third studio album by the Steven Wilson/Aviv Geffen side project Blackfield. Having listened to Blackfield I and Blackfield II, I sampled this one with the intention to find out the same melodies of the previous albums. And, fortunately. those melodies are still there. I find out that this album has a lot of potential, especially when I gave it the very first spin. I must admit, however, that the second and third time I listened to this album were not satisfying. By the fourth time, the album got better and better with every track. Probably, the album has a melodical nature, just like Blackfield I and II , with a more melancholical storytelling. Worth to mention is that this album has a more orchestral performance and most of it are slow paced. Probably, the album is not easily likeable during the first three spins of the CD. It grows on you little by little. Every song is very well-performed, well-written and composed. The only thing I must criticize about "Welcome to My DNA" is Steven Wilson?s minimized involvement in the album, leaving Aviv Geffen as the guy responsible for the Blackfield project. This is quite understandable: Wilson was extremely busy with his other projects: No-One (with Tim Bowness), Bass Communion-Wilson?s electronic music experiment-, Storm Corrosion (with Opeth?s Mickael Arkenfelt), and his solo albums. Incidentally, at this point of his career, Wilson disbanded his most cherished, successful project Porcupine Tree, so as to focus himself on his solo career, which had already started in 2008 with "Insurgentes". But, this fact does not necessarily mean that "Welcome to My DNA" is really bad. In fact, if you listen to it very hard, you will find out it is a nice treat to your ears. The album?s highlights include tracks like Glass House, Go To Hell, Far Away, On The Plane and Oxygen. Additionally, there are other tracks that, in spite of not being part of the album?s highlights, are also worth listening, such as Waving, Dissolving With The Night, Blood, Zigota and DNA. Probably, the most shocking moment of the album is Zigota, which is mostly a melodical song that has a sudden powerful guitar riff provided by Steven Wilson that resembles anything that Porcupine Tree did in the past. In short, if you still have mixed thoughts about "Welcome to My DNA", please, give it another chance. Maybe, it is neither Blackfield I nor Blackfield II, but still sounds good.
YES SO FRAGILE
aviv is my life ♥♥♥
love u!
I bought this album this summer when I was in France. I was looking for cd's I usually wouldn'¨t find in my country and well this one is not one of em but I have listened to blackfield before and I know they are good. And I know I love PORCUPINE TREE. So it was a must! I dont regret it at all! I am listening to it RIGHT NOW tbh. :) Its cool to know its so personal too! Makes it so emotional
