Now, momma, God bless her, taught me how to recognize a real songwriter from AM radio blah-blah-blah. But in the 'racks my roomies were all rap and RnB dudes. I learned to **listen** instead of judge. I learned that the difference between Sex Pistols or the Clash and, say, Curtis Blow was only in style, not message. I won't lie, that woke 20-year-old me the fuck up.
Because of that newly opened mind, I **really** like Babyface. I saw him as the lyrical heir to Smokey and Motown.
Now, this song was... oh, 'third tier'... it was in my memory but not really on the mental playlist, if you know what I mean. But here I am **decades** later re-appreciating the work.
And if that's not a compliment, well I hope you can think of a better one.
