Formed in 1936 as State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR / Государственный симфонический оркестр СССР, also known as ГАСО (GASO) or Госоркестр (Gosorchester).
In the 1960s it became "Academic": USSR Academic State Symphony Orchestra / Государственный академический симфонический оркестр СССР.
Since 1991 it is called State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Russian Federation / Государственный академический симфонический оркестр Российской Федерации.
On 27 October 2005 the State Academic Symphony Orchestra was officially named after their former conductor, Евгений Фёдорович Светланов / .
