Vital Remains - Dawn Of The Apocalypse

Review by Karen Simmonds

Dawn Of The Apocalypse by Vital Remains is a masterpiece of extreme metal. The album showcases the band's brutal and technical musicianship, with intricate guitar riffs and relentless drumming. The vocals by Glen Benton are guttural and menacing, perfectly complementing the dark and apocalyptic themes of the album. The production quality is top-notch, with a clear and powerful sound that enhances the intensity of the music. The album contains some of the band's most iconic tracks, such as "Dechristianize" and "Icons of Evil," which have become staples of the death metal genre. Dawn Of The Apocalypse is a must-listen for any fan of extreme metal, and a testament to Vital Remains' status as one of the most influential bands in the genre.

Vital Remains was formed in 1989, in Providence, Rhode Island by Paul Flynn (Guitar), Tony Lazaro (Guitar), Jeff Gruslin (Vocals) and Tom Supkow (Bass). Same year the recorded their first demo "Reduced to Ashes" and it sold 500 copies in two weeks, which was pretty impressive. In 1990, after six months of live shows and rehearsing, the band recorded their second demo entitled "Excruciating Pain". The album got them a deal with the French label, Thrash Records. And so same year in November they recorded the 7" "The Black Mass". The album sold 1500 copies in two weeks and was the most profitable band on the label. Peaceville Records offered them a deal and they accepted. In the summer of 1991 they were signed to Peaceville's sub label Deaf Records. They began writing new material for the first full-length "Let Us Pray" which was released in 1992. The album gained them alot of attention in the underground and tours were established. In May 1993 the band embarked on a major US tour with the Death Metal band Autopsy. The tour lasted from May to June and was a huge succes. In 1995 the band released their second full-length, "Into Cold Darkness". But because of poor promotion and distribution the band left the label. But in 1996 they were signed to French label, Osmose for two albums. The same year they recorded the masterpiece "Forever Underground" which gained them a European tour which was another succes. Once they returned to the US they were put on two tours, both with Incantation. In 1999 they recorded the album "Dawn of the Apocalypse" which was the bands most extreme album to date. After many line-up changes and such, they returned to the studio to record the album "Dechristianize" which was released in 2003.

Vital Remains' Dawn of the Apocalypse finds the band coming dangerously close to extreme prolixity, since the album gets to a near hour of duration and its average song length around 8 minutes. The band must have been very ambitious, but they were overvaluing themselves, because the record isn't exactly "catchy": actually, if it wasn't for the bizarre presence of mostly standard Thrash Metal riffing, the album would have sounded much more boring. Instead, here the band is anticipating the comical work of bands like Skeletonwitch by almost a decade. There's the occasional dumb section desiged to make one wish to headbang to it incessantly, the chaotic pseudo-blasting section, the occasional acoustic guitar passage and. well, not a hook to listen. The fact is that Dawn of the Apocalypse is one of those very rare ignorant albums which, despite being unambitious and featuring a limited palette of sounds, turns out to be strangely good. The album has some unnecessary interludes, but everything else is an unstable tracking shot of haphazard riffs, tremolo leads and no sense of melody. The album incorporates that sense of stubborn madness Vital Remain have always struggled to achieve, and did only here. The album is recommended: everything else from the band isn't.Highlights: "Black Magick Curse", "Dawn of the Apocalypse".
everything like the Deicide
Glen has to be the paramount death metal vocalist. His low guttural growls with his high demon shrieks are and unbeatable combo.
You are a legend man!!! 41 years next, they'll have to pay huge amount to have this collection hahahahahaa
