They Might Be Giants - Idlewild

Review by Brandon Whalen

"They Might Be Giants' latest album, Idlewild, is a quirky and eclectic collection of songs that showcases the band's signature sound. From the upbeat and catchy "Can't Keep Johnny Down" to the hauntingly beautiful "When Will You Die," the album takes listeners on a journey through the band's unique musical landscape.

With its playful lyrics and upbeat instrumentation, Idlewild is a refreshing departure from the often-somber tone of modern music. The album's standout tracks include "Cloisonné," a funky and infectious tune with a catchy chorus, and "Old Pine Box," a moody and introspective ballad that showcases the band's songwriting prowess.

this song has strong Rejected Theme Song energy

Thursday, May 12, 2022 ~12:11a.m. CDT: I like this song, and am compelled by the video. 'tis a high point in any culture when a significant percentage of the 'average citizenry', as it were, has the option to live in such a way as illustrated above, for at least one year without fear of starvation and/or noticible malnutrition. I find that the high point of American culture was from roughly 1989 through 1994. Does anyone else define the United States' piedmont as around that time, just before the New Turn of the Century? If not, when?
This song reminds me of when I lived in a dump. I still do, it's just a different dump.
When I was a kid it was real treat to go to the dump. We'd find the coolest stuff there! These weren't official dumps, more like "dumping places" and we'd find old bottles and my brother found a big dog skull with huge teeth in it and we'd find old pottery and stuff. It was cool.
This sounds like it’s from a high budget, stage musical
Dumps are awesome! Oh those childhood memories of the Waialua dump, we found all kinds of cool stuff!
needs to be longer!
This is a sad song
I have a weird emotional connection to this song because of a drawing this girl I talked to a lot on Skype did of one of my OCs singing along to it, almost two years ago. The girl's name was Christine. She did it without me ever asking and it was super nice of her. Then one day she just stopped talking to me. I dunno if something I did made her uncomfortable, I don't know what would. Then later I found she had deleted all of her social media, save for her now inactive YouTube channel, which she just used to like videos. I don't know why she left either. She said vague things about having a bad relationship with her parents and having depression, but she never specified. Now, when I listen to this song, I think of her.
The song, the video, the band... It's all just perfect.
This should be a theme song for a cartoon. It just has that catchy feeling to it.
At :06 - pause... "Mellin's food for Infants and Invalids" Ad from 1890's on the "Modern Dump" magazine. If you read the history of "Mellin's Emulsion" food for children living in slums suffering from the diseases of the day... But on the lighter side... I can't get this song outta my head... and I like that!
I want to write a sitcom just so this can be the theme song.
The line "While the monkeys type away." seems to be a reference to the classic thought experiment that if you put a million monkeys and a million type writers in a room, eventually, one of them would create a word for word recreation of the entirety of Shakespeare's works.

Now, to apply this thought experiment to the song and it's point (that being, People use tools to keep others from escaping poverty [To generalize]) the song is effectively conveying that the main puppet is waiting for the day when one of the monkey's finally completes his typing of Shakespeare's works.
This just prompted me to watch the Four Yorkshiremen Monty Python sketch again!
Same director as The Mesopotamians MV. Similar style. Nice.
Fun fact: this song is considered an answer to "Why did you grow a beard?".
I relate to this song far too much. For anyone who's in this kind of situation, but feels trapped, you can get out of it.
Finally, someone else who subscribes to Modern Dump
But bats don't lay eggs...
Hail Caeser and all that Sir!
Romani Domus EUNT!
