Review by Mark Given

Split is a collaborative album by Simon Scott and Danny Norbury that showcases their unique styles and abilities as musicians. The album is a blend of ambient and classical music that creates a haunting and ethereal atmosphere.

The album opens with the track "Waterfoot," which features Norbury's delicate cello playing and Scott's atmospheric soundscapes. The combination of the two creates a stunning and emotional piece of music that sets the tone for the rest of the album.

Throughout the album, Scott and Norbury's talents complement each other perfectly, with Norbury's cello adding depth and emotion to Scott's ambient soundscapes. Tracks such as "Fen Drove" and "Stell" showcase the duo's ability to create beautiful and captivating music that is both calming and thought-provoking.

The album's standout track is "Elsewhere," a hauntingly beautiful piece that features Norbury's cello accompanied by Scott's gentle guitar and atmospheric soundscapes. The track is a perfect example of the duo's ability to create music that is both haunting and beautiful.

Notes

  • Originally intended as two separate 5” records, this became a split 8” release when lathe cut legend extraordinaire Peter King broke it to me he was no longer making 5” records. So we have four stunning tracks, each just 2 minutes long (to fit on the original 5” format). As with so many Brian releases this record may be short, but it is perfectly formed. The two sides written independently of each other work beautifully well as a whole. Expect more gentle, somber loveliness. The release comes in a fully reversible sleeve, you can choose which way round you like it, housed inside a manila A4 envelope (of course).
  • Pre-Orders (this version) include an additional 8" single-sided lathe-cut and a 3" CDr.

About Simon Scott, Danny Norbury

Simon Scott (b. 1971) is a British sound artist and multi-instrumentalist who is currently based in Cambridge, UK and drums for UK band Slowdive. Below Sea Level was Scotts debut album for 12k, released in May 2012 and it was rereleased in 2015 by UK label Touch (on their TOUCHLINE digital series). The aesthetics of active listening and the subjective distinction of compositional materials and sound timbres are predominant explorations in his work. His music is a fusion of digital signal manipulation, micro-melodies and minimalism combined with environmental sounds and organic acoustic textures. He is inspired by his interests in sound ecology, music technology, digital media, illustration, photography, composition and sound art. 'Floodlines', released on CD by TOUCH in 2016, was a live room recording from a gig on 31st January at London's Cafe Oto. Since the late 1990s Scotts work has been featured in a variety of international films, sonic art exhibitions, dance productions and digital multi-media projects. He has toured worldwide since 1988 (he was the drummer for Slowdive between 1990 and 1994, who worked with Brian Eno on the Souvlaki album), and his track For Martha was included on the respected German label Kompakts Pop Ambient 2012 compilation series. His music has been previously released on Morr Music, Miasmah, Slaapwel, Sonic Pieces, Secret Furry Hole, Ghostly International and other respected international recording labels. Scott has shared the stage, remixed and been remixed by Isan, Nils Frahm, Taylor Deupree, Klimek, Tim Hecker, Christopher Willits, Marcus Fisher, Lawrence English, The Caretaker, Sawako, Fourcolor, Ulrich Schnauss, Machinefabriek, Pinkcourtesyphone (Richard Chartier) and The Sight Below. Scott is also a freelance composer for film and advertising and in 2008, he established the KESH recording label.
