Protomartyr's album Dreads 85 84 is a masterful display of post-punk energy and introspective lyricism. The band's signature sound of gritty guitars and pounding drums is on full display throughout the album, with standout tracks like "Day Without End" and "The Chuckler" showcasing the band's ability to create dynamic, driving rock songs.
What sets Dreads 85 84 apart, however, is the depth of its lyrics. Singer Joe Casey's words are equal parts poetic and ominous, exploring themes of isolation, disillusionment, and the human condition. On tracks like "Worm in Heaven" and "Michigan Hammers," Casey's voice takes on a haunting quality as he delivers lines that are as thought-provoking as they are unsettling.
Protomartyr is at SF Independent Dec 18 for $17 which seems more reasonable.
