Review by Andy Seguin

Paul Motian New York is a masterpiece of contemporary jazz that showcases the profound musicianship of legendary drummer Paul Motian. The album features a stellar cast of musicians, including saxophonist Joe Lovano, guitarist Bill Frisell, and bassist Charlie Haden, who deliver an inspired performance that is both captivating and emotionally charged.

The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful "Folk Song for Rosie," a slow and mournful ballad that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Motian's intricate drumming provides the perfect backdrop for Lovano's soulful saxophone, while Frisell's subtle guitar work adds depth and texture to the piece.

The album's standout track is undoubtedly "The Storyteller," a dynamic and energetic piece that showcases Motian's incredible drumming skills. The intricate interplay between the musicians is truly mesmerizing, as they weave in and out of each other's melodies with effortless precision.

Other highlights include the moody and introspective "Abacus," the playful and upbeat "Onetwo," and the hauntingly beautiful "Dance." Throughout the album, Motian's drumming is the driving force behind the music, providing a solid foundation for the other musicians to build upon.
