Kathryn Tickell - Borderlands

Review by Dr Lal Thadani

Borderlands is a remarkable album by the talented British musician Kathryn Tickell. The album showcases her exceptional skills on the Northumbrian pipes, fiddle, and viola, as well as her ability to seamlessly blend traditional folk music with contemporary sounds.

Tickell's compositions on Borderlands are a testament to her deep understanding and appreciation of the Northumbrian folk music tradition. The album includes several tracks that are inspired by the landscapes, history, and people of Northumberland, such as the hauntingly beautiful "Bonny at Morn" and the lively "Lads of Alnwick."

The album also features collaborations with other musicians, including the Scottish harpist Corrina Hewat, the Irish accordionist Máirtín O'Connor, and the English guitarist Martin Simpson. These collaborations add a refreshing dimension to the album, as each musician brings their own unique style and influences to the music.

When Jack Armstrong wrote this tune, how did he know what was in my soul when I first started to walk the Simonside hills in 1967?
You listen for some thing for 60 years. Then, finally, you hear this at last.
That first one brings on the tears :-)

I am not a Northumbrian by birth, but my ma was a Scotswood road born Geordie, and her family hails from Rothbury. I walked over the Simonside hills (and the Cheviots) countless times. Heard Kathryn Tickell perform in Rothbury. Life does not get better and money cannot buy it.
