Johnny Hodges - Sandys Gone

Review by Miguel Hernández

Johnny Hodges' album "Sandys Gone" is a tribute to his late wife, who passed away in 1973. The album features a collection of jazz standards, all beautifully arranged and performed by Hodges and his band. The album has a melancholic feel to it, with Hodges' saxophone conveying a deep sense of loss and longing.

The opening track, "Satin Doll," sets the tone for the rest of the album. Hodges' smooth and soulful saxophone is complemented by the gentle piano and understated rhythm section. Other standout tracks include "Take the A Train," "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)," and "In a Sentimental Mood."

Summary by Miguel Hernández

"Sandys Gone" is a moving and heartfelt tribute to Hodges' wife. It's a testament to his skill as a musician that he's able to convey such a range of emotions through his saxophone. This album is a must-listen for any jazz fan, and a fitting tribute to a lost loved one.

Comments

Boy, this is egregious tripe! I encountered it as one of those "Eight Classic Album" compilations. This album is not only not classic, it should never have been made, and it should not have been marketed as a Johnny Hodges album. He plays lead on some cuts, but you can barely tell from the arrangements. It is similar to easy-listening music of the early 60s or Muzac, and it has almost no improvisation and does not really classify as jazz. Johnny Hodges was one of the great practitioners of the saxophone, but this is not worth buying even by his most rabid fan.
