Review by juliette crane

JJ Johnson's self-titled album, Jay Jay Johnson, is a masterpiece in the world of jazz. Released in 1954, the album showcases Johnson's virtuosic trombone playing and his unique approach to jazz composition.

The album features a stellar lineup of musicians, including pianist Hank Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Max Roach. Together, they create a sound that is both sophisticated and accessible, blending bebop, swing, and blues influences into a cohesive whole.

The standout tracks on the album include "Lament," a melancholy ballad that showcases Johnson's lyrical playing, and "Turnpike," a fast-paced number that highlights the band's tight rhythms and intricate melodies.
