Dardanus, the opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau, has been given a new lease of life in this recording by Raphaël Pichon and Pygmalion. The album, released by Harmonia Mundi, is a stunning interpretation of the 18th-century masterpiece.
Pichon, a French conductor and founder of Pygmalion, has worked tirelessly to produce an authentic and historically informed performance of Dardanus. His attention to detail is evident in the delicate balance he strikes between the orchestra and the vocalists. The result is a recording that is both grand and intimate.
The soloists are exceptional, with each bringing their unique voice and interpretation to the music. The standout performance is undoubtedly that of the soprano Sabine Devieilhe, who plays the role of Iphise. Her voice is luminous and ethereal, and she brings a depth of emotion to the role that is truly captivating.
The orchestra, too, is outstanding. The playing is precise and nuanced, with each instrument contributing to the overall sound of the piece. The use of period instruments adds an authenticity to the performance that is often lacking in modern recordings.
