It only lasts for about 48 seconds, but those 48 seconds opened up a whole new world for me. I'm talking about Ernie Isley's incredible guitar solo-and this was something at 13 years old I understood. This was the first "Rock" solo I had ever heard on an original Soul song by a major Soul artist that was presented like a real Rock guitar solo-no cheesy effects, no "ping-ponging" from side-to-side, etc. It's the first great solo of Ernie's career and in the wake of Jimi Hendrix's death (who once played with The Isley Brothers) would begin to propel Ernie into the legendary status he would obtain as "Our Axe Man". As I said previously, having been raised in a world where I understood Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Frank Zappa the same way I did The Temptations, Johnnie Taylor and The Staples Singers, I understood completely the impact of this moment-and it still rocks me the same way it did some 50 years ago!
