Review by Manish Jain

Isis' debut album Mosquito Control is a stunning display of the band's ability to blend heavy metal and post-rock into a cohesive and powerful sound. The album is a masterclass in instrumental dynamics, with the band expertly building tension and releasing it with crushing riffs and explosive drumming.

The opening track "Poison Eggs" sets the tone for the album with its slow, brooding intro that gradually builds into a wall of sound. From there, the band takes the listener on a journey through a series of intricate and complex compositions that showcase their technical prowess and musical creativity.

Tracks like "Life Under the Swatter" and "Catalyst" feature intricate guitar work that weaves in and out of the mix, while the rhythm section of bassist Jeff Caxide and drummer Aaron Harris provides a solid foundation for the band's sonic explorations.

The album's centerpiece is the epic "The Hive" which clocks in at over 12 minutes and features some of the album's most memorable riffs and melodies. The song builds slowly, with layers of guitar and percussion adding to the tension before exploding into a massive wall of sound.

Comments

Mosquito Control and Red Sea are killer
2020 anyone
1:51 still gives me those INSANE CHILLS! I’ll never forget this ep changing the fuckin game on everyone in the hardcore scene. Bringing the Stoner/doom pentatonic yummies everyone proceeded to jizz over. Cant forget the Neurosis aspect Aaron brought as well. I miss these days.
It's probably drop C, like most metal bands now. Drop D is for the E string, but if you had a 7 string guitar(or just tuned your 6), that 7th string is a B, now just tune that down to drop C the same way you do drop D for E string and you have what every fucking metal band does now. Congrats.
i think he means three steps lower
3 octaves? So 2 octaves lower than bass? What scale length and strings are you using? What amplification are you using to reproduce these notes?
intro is my favorite isis riff
My band tunes to standard drop D. Only three octaves lower. It's pretty fun. It's kinda like playing with a broken bow and arrow with no arrow that makes a lot of loud noise.
1:51
The riff from the beginning has to be one the best Metal riffs ever...
This song is amazing!
My band is doin a cover of this song. we're dropped a# so it crazier. and my vox are lower. it's fun.
This EP is soooo fucking heavy like holy shit! i would have never thought they could be this heavy if i only listening to their later albums like oceanic and Panopticon. Which i did for a while because i just started to get to know these guys, but then i found out about their heavier stuff.
Best Sludge band.
este si que es un temazo viva isis

Holy fuck 4:35 is HEAVY
I loved it because it just kept getting better and better for me since I listen to a lot of metal. But I honestly love their In the Absence of Truth album. Even though I love their heavier stuff I love their ambient, peaceful, psychedelic type of albums, because they are so laid back and relaxing, and those melodies...mmm. Lol, I think I've been waiting for a band like Isis.
I love the riffs in this song
Possiably the heaviest EP i've ever heard in my life. And it's only an EP with what, 4 songs??!?! I would have never guessed Isis could be this heavy since i started backwards from their end albums Wavering Radient all the way to their heavy stuff.
