About Gypsy Trips
US 60s folk rock duo originally from Oklahoma but relocated to Los Angeles.
The Tillisons subsequently teamed up with J.J. Cale to record an album "A Trip Down the Sunset Strip" (1967) under the name The Leathercoated Minds.
Rock N Roll Gypsies by Gypsy Trips is a must-listen for fans of rock, blues, and folk music. The band's unique sound and impressive musicianship make this album a standout in the genre.
It appears that the Chesterfield Kings were influenced by this version and the Electric Prunes version and combined the sounds of the two to make their version of Ain't it Hard, which is a synthesis of both aforementioned records.
I've always wanted this 45 but it's either out of my price range or not available. Right now there's one for $140. I'll have to be satisfied with the Hearts and Flowers version.
Love this version best. I have the promo of this. I got it in those records you got in a box about 10 45s in each. You Never Knew what you were getting, Only the top 45 on each side.
i'm still blown away by how fresh this track is. it obviously is inspired a lot by bob dylan's bringing it all back home/highway 61. found it at the millbrae library in the bay area; the source, funny enough, is a compilation by viva records, titled "AINT IT HARD: Sunset Strip 60's Sounds!" By far the best on this comp. If I remember correctly, the liner notes read that Terrye and Roger came over to the great west with dreams of romance and commercial success. One, perhaps two of them, would not manifest. But at least we can learn from them, and hear their story.
It WAS backward guitar--and the whole thing was recorded and mixed in Leon's Skyhill Drive home studio. The Electric Prunes recorded their version of it there, too. :-)
I'm listening to this on Pebbles 9 - it's great fun. I can see the Leon Russell connection, it has a surprisingly dense production. Sounds like backwards guitar at the end there...
Love this . Interesting the Electric Prunes covered this for their first single. I've been looking for this single for years hope to get one on ebay at least.
