Review by Damien Bruyndonckx

At The Crescendo, an album by Gene Norman Presents Mel Tormé, is a timeless masterpiece that showcases the legendary singer's unparalleled talent and versatility. Released in 1955, the album captures Tormé's live performance at the historic Crescendo Club in Los Angeles, where he performs a mix of jazz standards and original compositions with his signature smooth vocals and impeccable phrasing.

The album opens with "Mountain Greenery," a lively and upbeat tune that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Tormé's scatting and improvisational skills are on full display in "Lullaby of Birdland" and "What Is This Thing Called Love," while his tender rendition of "Stardust" and "Blue Moon" showcase his ability to convey deep emotion through his singing.

The backing band, led by pianist Marty Paich, provides the perfect accompaniment to Tormé's vocals, with each member contributing to the overall sound and feel of the album. The arrangements are both sophisticated and accessible, allowing Tormé's voice to shine while also highlighting the skill and talent of the musicians.
