Although adorned with the best album cover of the year, J. Tillman (aka Father John Misty) has also managed to roll twelve beautiful vignettes up inside this glorious package. The silliest song on the album, a surrealistic, Dylanesque romp titled "I'm Writing A Novel," sells its writer short because, in fact, he has written twelve. These songs are so rich in detail and emotional depth that each contains enough lyrical content to keep one pondering their meanings long after the needle has left the groove. That is if one can make it past the gorgeous singing and haunting melodies that grace this triumph of sound. Alternately straightforward and completely impressionistic lyrically, the feeling and message of every tune, nonetheless, comes across from the first listen and continue to fortify themselves on successive spins.
