Review by Vishesh Shahani

Elliott Sharp's album "Commune Free Land For Free People" is a musical journey that takes the listener on a wild ride through various genres and styles. Sharp's virtuosic guitar playing is on full display throughout the album, as he effortlessly shifts between blues, jazz, rock, and experimental sounds.

The album's opener, "Freedom," sets the tone with its driving rhythm and searing guitar solos. From there, Sharp takes the listener on a sonic journey that is both complex and accessible. Tracks like "The People's Republic" and "Commune" showcase Sharp's ability to blend disparate elements into a cohesive whole, while "Resistance" and "Revolution" are full of energy and urgency.

Sharp's guitar playing is undoubtedly the star of the show, but the album also features some great contributions from his bandmates. Drummer Lance Carter and bassist Eric Mingus provide a solid foundation for Sharp's guitar work, while guest vocalists like Tracie Morris and Edwin Torres add a new dimension to the music.

Sharp studied anthropology at Cornell University, where he played in a band and took an electronics class with synthesizer inventor . At Bard College he studied with free jazz pioneer (future Lounge Lizards John and were classmates). He went to graduate school in Buffalo, where his academic advisor was . He moved permanently to New York City in 1979, where he played gigs at various underground performance spaces, including the notorious ~Mudd Club. In the '80s Sharp became a major figure on the downtown New York experimental music scene, collaborating with many of it's most prominent players, including , , , and . Over the years, Sharp has led his own bands more often than not. His music draws upon the wide range of his influences, from Coltrane to Zappa to Xenakis and beyond.
