Die Haut - Die Hard

Review by Sonyo Estavillo

Die Hard by Die Haut is a powerful and intense album that showcases the band's unique blend of post-punk, industrial, and experimental rock. The album features guest appearances from several notable musicians, including Nick Cave, Lydia Lunch, and Blixa Bargeld, adding to the album's already impressive lineup.

From the opening track "Der Karibische Western" to the closing "In der Gegenwart der Zukunft," Die Hard is an unrelenting assault on the senses. The band's signature driving rhythms and distorted guitars create a sense of urgency and tension throughout the album, while the guest vocalists add a haunting and ethereal quality to the songs.

Standout tracks include "Träume sind Schäume," which features Nick Cave's distinctive vocals and showcases the band's ability to create a hypnotic and otherworldly atmosphere. "Satisfaction," a cover of the Rolling Stones classic, is given a dark and brooding makeover that perfectly captures the band's industrial sound.

looks great now, but you have absolutely no idea how difficult it was for me to organize this shoot for The Tube. apart from being co-presenter of this special programme, i had also been given the job of researcher and finding interesting locations to shoot the bands. i had this idea for the show, to film a band playing on the glienicke brucke, but i realised getting permission to film on the spy-bridge from the US authorities, was going to be very difficult, as no one had ever done anything like that before. luckily, i had a good friend who one of the heads at AFN, and he put in a good word in for me. i chose Die Haut, not only because they were friends, but because their music was instrumental and i thought having such an exotic and dramatic backdrop as the bridge where gary powers had been exchanged, might make it significantly more interesting to a uk audience. arranging the permission to film there wasn't the only challange i faced, not only were Die Haut really reluctant to perform to a playback track (hence their antics), but they appeared totally unaware of the historical importance of filming their tune on this unique east-west border crossing. they were even late for the shoot, and at one point, the tv crew thought they were not going to turn up at all. as i wanted to have something visually special that no one had ever seen before, i arranged for a dolly (lift) to take the cameraman up above the bridge and as we were filming, two heavily armed US army jeeps pulled up. i aproached one of the gunners, who was clutching a huge machine gun. on the other side of the bridge, we could see the russians were going crazy, running about. i thought we were about to kick off a conflict. I asked the gunman if he had enough ammo, just in case the russians started shooting at us, his terse reply was, "this baby is not loaded man!" when i asked him why he just said, "it's to stop some crazy from starting World war three"...
So amazing, I've never seen this video before, I'm pretty speechless. Just too bad Lydia weren't in it too.
Ladies and gentlemen, you're experiencing a piece of art.
.. go Germany..!!
