In 1984 "Cirque Du Soleil" is born with the assistance of the Québec government, as part of the celebrations surrounding the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartiers arrival in Canada. The first production, "Le Grand Tour" debuts in the small Québec town of Gaspé, and is then performed in 10 other cities throughout the province. In June 1984 they released their first 7" Single "Le Cirque Du Soleil / Le Funambule", performed by their band .
Since 2002 they have been releasing their music on their own label imprint (also known as Cirque Du Soleil Records).

As of 2013 the business has 5,000 employees worldwide, including more than 1,300 artists. It is currently the largest theatrical producer in the world with 9 resident shows in the US and a dozen touring shows around the world.
In 2015, TPG Capital, Fosun Industrial Holdings and Caisse de dépot et placement du Québec purchased 90% of Cirque du Soleil. The sale received regulatory approval from the Government of Canada on 30 June 2015.
