The Original Ellington Suite by Chico Hamilton Quintet with Eric Dolphy is a stunning tribute to one of the greatest composers and bandleaders of the 20th century. The album features six tracks that are all arrangements of Duke Ellington's classic tunes, including "Take the A Train," "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)," and "Perdido."
The musicianship on the album is exceptional, with Chico Hamilton leading the quintet on drums, Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, Nathan Gershman on cello, Fred Katz on cello and piano, and Hal Gaylor on bass. The arrangements are fresh and inventive, with each musician bringing their unique style and sound to the music.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Mood Indigo," which features Dolphy's hauntingly beautiful bass clarinet and Gershman's soulful cello. The track is a masterclass in restraint and nuance, with each musician playing off each other to create a truly memorable performance.
