American country music singer (born March 18th, 1934, Sledge, Mississippi; died December 12th, 2020, Dallas, Texas). As the first African American country music star, he scored 30 No. 1 hits in the US country charts and won the 1972 Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal performance.
