Review by Valentino Međimorec

The album Herzog Blaubarts Burg by Béla Bartók, Sylvia Sass, Kolos Kováts, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Georg Solti is a compelling and haunting musical masterpiece. The album features Bartók's only opera, "Bluebeard's Castle," which tells the story of a newlywed bride who discovers the dark secrets of her mysterious husband's castle.

Sylvia Sass delivers a powerful performance as Judith, the bride, while Kolos Kováts portrays the enigmatic Bluebeard with a brooding intensity. The London Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Georg Solti, provides a rich and evocative musical backdrop that perfectly captures the eerie and foreboding atmosphere of the story.

The album is a testament to Bartók's genius as a composer, showcasing his unique blend of traditional Hungarian folk music and modernist techniques. The opera's haunting melodies and lush orchestration create a sense of unease that builds throughout the performance, culminating in a chilling finale.

Born: 1881-03-25 (Nagyszentmiklós, Magyar Királyság). Died: September 26, 1945 (New York, New York, United States). Béla Viktor János Bartók was a Hungarian composer, pianist, ethnomusicologist and collector of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk music (born 25/03/1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, today Sânnicolau Mare, Romania - died 25/09/1945 in New York, U.S.A). He is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century; his vast production reveals a daring and restless harmonic instinct that is affected by his passionate studies on Hungarian folk songs. Typical elements of Béla Bartók style (derived from Hungarian, Transylvanian and Romanian folklore) consists in the use of irregular rhythms and a clear preference for obsessive rhythms. His compositions have sonorities, sometimes abstract, but often harsh, rough and barbaric. Married to the pianist . His 2nd son, became a recording engineer.
