This allbum was a classic -- Rich the technical wizard; fast, powerful -- and Roach, the talking drummer, whose drums bore color and voice, and for whom the things played proved sheer musings, at once foreboding and awesome.
Most of you viewers are white, and also very young. However, when it comes down to Buddy Rich, you have a bad habit of comparing, and rating him as the best drummer in the world, or no one can top him. You just need to knock it off, PERIOD!!! Bernard "Buddy" Rich was also heavily influenced by black jazz drummers before him, such as Chick Webb, "Papa" Jo Jones, Cozy Cole, "Big" Sid Catlett, just to a few. White jazz drummers were also around before Buddy entered the scene, such as Gene Krupa, Davey Tough, Ray Bauduc, etc. Rich was a big band drummer that consisted of modern jazz musicians. The latter also talked about the first generation of modern jazz drummers, such as Kenny Clarke, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Stan Levey, Shelly Manne, Denzil Best, Shadow Wilson, Roy Haynes. They were the true pioneers of the modern jazz era, PERIOD!!!
MY PERSONAL OPINION: Max is by far much more musical and his phrasing is much more fluid. And he had a groove that Buddy didn't have. Buddy's playing was much more chop oriented which is cool but it's gets old faster and he kinda stayed in one box more snobbing on anything that wasn't "straight ahead Jazz" for the most part. I like how Max pulled from his indigenous roots and played african rhythms. And the biggest thing i dislike about Rich is the fact that as a person he was a fucking asshole, and a narcissistic egomaniac. When it comes to musicianship being a good hang can be the difference from getting the good gigs to not being called again. I don't care how good you are, don't fucking tear everyone down in your path. You'll create so many more enemies that was and that's just not smart. Be humble, keep learning and keep an open mind. I feel max did better with that out of the two.
2 GRANDISSIMI BATTERISTI, BUDDY MOLTO ISTINTIVO , MAX TECNICO DA PAURA , CON IL TEMPO , FACEVA CIÒ CHE VOLEVA . UN BATTERISTA CHE HA STUDIATO ANCHE DIREZIONE D'ORCHESTRA!
One of the reasons why Buddy Rich lost to Max Roach was because of his bad technique. Buddy Rich leaned forward while playing and it caused him to get a terrible hunch back. Many drummers told him to fix his bad posture, but Buddy Rich was arrogant and wouldn't listen to anyone.
Best battle with the legends here. Max is probably the only one who can keep up with Buddy. But Buddy on the other hand was so fast like a machine gun and never missed one beat at all. Love them both and sad they are gone.
Does not being an arrogant racist earn Max points for anyone else? Buddy played, Max grooved. In Drums, you want a groove not a soulless speed run that sounds like a practice drill.
Buddy in rudiments and in the big band is number one. But he couldn't read music. Max made the drum sound like music e was reading music very well. Both of them had a different approach on the drum..
Excellent drummers both.
This track is wonderful.
