Review by John Purroy Jackson

The album "Brandenburgische Konzerte Nr 1-6" by Bach, Concentus Musicus Wien, Nikolaus Harnoncourt is a stunning collection of six concertos that showcase the brilliance of Bach's compositions. The orchestra, led by the legendary conductor Harnoncourt, delivers a powerful and rich performance that captures the essence of Bach's music.

The first concerto, in F major, features a lively and upbeat tempo that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The second concerto, in F major, is a beautiful display of the orchestra's ability to play in harmony, with each instrument contributing to the overall sound.

The third concerto, in G major, is a standout piece that highlights the skill of the soloists. The fourth concerto, in G major, is a slower and more contemplative piece that showcases the orchestra's ability to play with emotion and sensitivity.

The fifth concerto, in D major, is a dynamic and energetic piece that features some of the most intricate and complex music in the album. The final concerto, in B-flat major, is a triumphant and celebratory piece that brings the album to a satisfying conclusion.

About Bach, Concentus Musicus Wien, Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
