Interesting to hear this vs Elvis' version. Chords are different, stopping of song is different, etc. It goes to show what production can do for a song.
Recorded September 6, 1946. Released in 1947.
Elvis recorded great songs, I'm no sycophant and not saying the songwriters ever got the credit they deserved, especially Ottis Blackwell. Although It annoys me when people say Elvis stole their style. He added his own style to all these songs, he improved and polished them too imo. I only wish their were more demos available of the songs recorded before Elvis did. I suspect most sounded much less Elvis like than they did after he added his twist to them. Mostly you can only find versions recorded by the song writers years after were it almost sounded like they were doing an Elvis imitation and not the there way around.
rock and roll? shhh!

Kinda hard to NOT like this one! Bravo!
This song was first released in 1946, and this was 8 years before Elvis did his version and it would became his very first record on the Sun label in 1954. And it was later re-released in 1949 and it would considered to become RCA Victor's very first 45 ever released, and the catalog number is 50-0000. It was on an orange wax, and it's considered to be a rarity, and it helped RCA to launched the 45 RPM format where they competing with the existing 78 RPM format.
Not sure how to classify this version, 1946.
Cruddup may have been a Blues singer, but I certainly would not call this song a Blues song. Cannot call it a Rock n Roll song either.
This is Rock & Roll, and it is 1946! So, the Father of Rock n Roll is Arthur Crudup!
Not Elvis Presely, not Bill Haley, not anybody but this old black man who died poor writing songs. So world, give him the credit he is due! "Arthur Crudup, the Father of Rock n Roll "!!!.
Did Mr.Crudup get any of the Royalties from Elvises recordings
On this day in 1949 {February 2nd} RCA Victor records released its first 45 RPM records; and one of the seven records released that day was "That's All Right Mama" by Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup...
Five years later in 1954 Elvis' covered version was his first release on Sun Records...
In 1957 Marty Robbins took it to #7 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart...
Arthur Crudup passed away on March 28th, 1974 at age 68...
R.I.P. Mr. Crudup, Mr. Robbins {1925 - 1982}, and The King {1935 - 1977}
This is great! What a shame he died a poor man...he was certainly rich in talent.
Annie
