Al Grey - Boss Bone

Review by Charles Briscoe

Al Grey's album Boss Bone is a masterpiece of jazz music that showcases the trombonist's virtuosity and creativity. From the opening track "Tickle Toe" to the closing number "Green Dolphin Street," Grey and his ensemble deliver a swinging, soulful performance that will delight fans of the genre.

The album's standout tracks include "The Nearness of You," a slow, romantic ballad that allows Grey to showcase his lyrical playing style, and "Route 66," a fast-paced, bluesy tune that features some impressive soloing from the entire band. Other highlights include "Night Train," a funky, grooving number that will get listeners moving, and "Bags' Groove," a tribute to the great vibraphonist Milt Jackson that features some excellent interplay between Grey and the band's pianist.
