Kenny Burrell - Blue Lights Vol 2

Review by L. Brandon Gloster

Kenny Burrell's album Blue Lights is a classic jazz masterpiece that showcases the guitarist's virtuosity and versatility in playing the blues. The album, released in 1958, features Burrell's quintet, which includes the likes of saxophonist Tina Brooks and drummer Art Blakey, among others.

From the opening track "Phinupi," listeners are treated to Burrell's trademark bluesy licks and smooth phrasing, which are complemented by the tight rhythm section. The album's title track, "Blue Lights," is a standout, with Burrell's guitar taking center stage in a slow-burning blues number that is both soulful and haunting.

Other highlights on the album include "Bass-ment," a hard-swinging tune that showcases Brooks' saxophone skills, and "Montono Blues," a Latin-infused blues that features percussionist Ray Barretto. The album ends on a high note with "Autumn in New York," a beautiful ballad that sees Burrell's guitar weaving in and out of the melody.

Comments

For what it is worth, the album cover drawing is by Andy Wahol. Damn nice in my opinion. This is from his period when he did many shoe illustrations, which also are nice.
Burrells style is sexy and flows well.
