About Me: The Dakota Blizzard are a professional ice hockey team based out of Fargo, ND. They are members of the Central Division in the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Since the area is less populated than other regions of the country, this team represents both North and South Dakota (similarly to the Carolina Hurricanes). They play their home games at the Red River Arena in Fargo, ND, which is the northernmost professional rink in the U.S. The main team colors are teal, purple, white and black.
The Dakota Blizzard was founded in June 2008 following a time of economic up rise due to the overall explosion of the oil industry and Bakken formation oil extraction in North Dakota. Despite the national recession, the owner of the team wanted to create a professional sports presence in the state of North Dakota since it’s the fastest growing economy in the U.S.
The team plays in the same division as St. Louis, Chicago, Colorado, Minnesota, Dallas, Winnipeg & Nashville. Fargo hosts 41 regular season games each year. They also play several games each season against teams from the Atlantic, Metropolitan, and Pacific Divisions. The Dakota Blizzard games are televised on NBC or online on the NHL GameCenter. The NHL also has its own television network, which can be viewed on satellite and digital cable.
The team boasts its reputation for building its foundation from “hometown heroes,” or the hockey all-stars who grew up in or near the North and South Dakota region. The Blizzard have drafted many former University of North Dakota and Fargo Force hockey players who have signed long term commitments with the team. North Dakota is also proud to be represented by some of the top Olympic athletes, such as Zach Parise, T.J. Oshie and Jonathon Toews (Team Canada).
Another important hometown connection is the affiliation with the Cullen Children’s Foundation, created by Matt Cullen, who is a NHL star and Fargo/Moorhead native.** The Dakota Blizzard works with this organization to provide financial resources to organizations that support children’s healthcare needs with an emphasis on cancer.
The Dakota Blizzard is under a licensing agreement with Reebok to create all team uniforms. Merchandise can be purchased online through the NHL webpage, DakotaBlizzard.wordpress.com, and various affiliate websites.**
