In 1963, he became a soloist of the Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theater Akhundova, continued to perform on the concert stage.
In 1964-1965 he trained at the Milan theater "La Scala" (Italy). In the 1960s, he performed in the largest cities of the Soviet Union, in the plays "Tosca" and "The Barber of Seville" (among the partners is ). He did not accept the offer to join the Bolshoi Theater troupe, not wanting to limit himself to opera performances.
In 1966 and 1969, the singer's tours at the Olympia Theater in Paris were a great success. In 1969, at the International Festival in Sopot, the singer received the First Prize. In Cannes in 1969 and 1970 at MIDEM - "Golden Disc" for multimillion copies of records. In 1974, he represented the USSR at the prestigious international Tokyo Music Festival in Japan.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the singer's popularity in the USSR was limitless.
In 1997, in his honor, the name 4980 (Magomayev) one of the asteroids was named
The singer's concert repertoire included more than 600 works (arias, romances, songs). He still remains one of the most popular performers in Russia and Azerbaijan.
