Shostakovich New York Philharmonic, Bernstein, Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy - Symphony No 5 Cello Concerto No 1

Review by Sarahdawn Tunis, MA

The album "Symphony No 5 Cello Concerto No 1" by Shostakovich, featuring performances by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein and the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy, is a stunning tribute to the composer's musical genius.

The symphony's opening movement is a powerful and dramatic statement, with the orchestra delivering a bold and commanding performance that captures the intensity of Shostakovich's vision. The second movement is more introspective, with the cello taking center stage and providing a hauntingly beautiful melody that is both melancholic and uplifting. The third movement is a playful and whimsical scherzo, showcasing Shostakovich's mastery of musical humor and satire. The final movement is a triumphant conclusion to the symphony, with the orchestra delivering a rousing performance that leaves the listener feeling energized and inspired.

The cello concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, and the performance by the New York Philharmonic with Bernstein conducting is simply breathtaking. The soloist's playing is both technically flawless and emotionally expressive, conveying the full range of the concerto's emotional depth and complexity. The orchestra's accompaniment is equally impressive, providing a rich and dynamic backdrop that perfectly complements the soloist's playing.

the fourth part is just... .. . . . .. . . . .. . . . . . . ..
I just listened to the remastered recording of this performance and I'm hugely pleased to find it online. Easily my favorite performance of this symphony.
what he is telling here is true

That’s great even if I prefer his performance with the London Symphony which I can’t find
I believe that is the best version of the fifth by Shostakovich Bernstein at his best.
Mamma mia... e che meraviglia! L' arte è un ponte tra i confini. Art is a bridge.
