Review by Jason Slagle

Passion Selon Saint Jean is a remarkable album by Scarlatti René Jacobs and Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The album features a stunning performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion, which was composed in the early 18th century. The ensemble's interpretation of the work is both powerful and nuanced, showcasing their exceptional musicianship and deep understanding of the piece.

The album's standout feature is undoubtedly the vocal performances, which are delivered with incredible skill and emotion. The soloists are particularly impressive, bringing a range of colors and textures to their parts. The choir, too, is outstanding, providing a rich and resonant backdrop for the soloists.

Scarlatti René Jacobs' direction is also noteworthy, as he expertly guides the ensemble through the complex and demanding score. His attention to detail is apparent in every aspect of the performance, from the dynamic contrasts to the subtle nuances of the text.
