Review by Oceana Leblanc

Portal's album "Home Recording Is Killing Music Portal Archive 1996-2009" is a fascinating journey through the band's early years. The album is a compilation of rare and previously unreleased tracks, showcasing the band's raw and experimental sound.

The album features Portal's trademark blend of death metal, black metal, and avant-garde music, which creates a unique and unsettling atmosphere. The band's use of dissonant guitar riffs, complex drum patterns, and eerie vocals creates a sense of unease and dread that permeates the entire album.

The tracks on the album range from short and intense bursts of aggression to longer, more atmospheric pieces that build tension and suspense. The album's production quality varies, as many of the tracks were recorded at home, but this only adds to the album's charm and authenticity.

  • Track notes:
  • 7" and EP tracks:
  • 1. Hydro-electric - Portal's vinyl debut from 1999, one side of a split 7" with Fridge (the bands that spawned Adem and Four Tet). Earworm Records, Worm 37, 1000 copies.
  • 2. Naming Stars - Taken from an Awkward Silence split 7", I re-EQed and remastered this as best as I could when compiling this archive because I was unhappy with the original version. It's still badly mixed, which was an unfortunate limitation of working on 4-track cassette, on to which the track was recorded.
  • 3. Falling (Portal remix) - From the "Falling" 7", released in 2001. Roisin Recordings, Roisin 07, 500 copies on transparent vinyl. I had to take this from the 7" vinyl recording as I was unable to find the master disc. "Incomplete without surface noise," as Autechre put it.
  • 4. Tundra (Wavewalkers remix) - Also from the "Falling" 7" and again from the vinyl. Wavewalkers are Raymond of That Petrol Emotion and Aindreas of Fatima Mansions.
  • 5. Red Over Blue - Improvised live guitar track, recorded on a Yamaha electric 12-string. Taken from the Earworm Subscription Series split 7" with V/Vm, released in 2001. Earworm Records, Wormss10, unknown number of copies..
  • 6. The First Breath of Winter - Taken from the Split CD with yellow6, in 2002. Make Mine Music, MMM001, 1000 copies.
  • Unreleased tracks:
  • 7. Adrift - Recorded in 1998 on 4-track cassette using a borrowed Roland SH1000 monosynth and a borrowed Roland TR505 drum machine, the latter of which I later bought. The track never seemed to fit on anything, being entirely electronic, and it's not the best recording in the world, but I still think it has a certain charm.
  • 8. Tundra (live) - Recorded live in 2003 at the Talbot Inn in Stoke-on-Trent, when Portal supported ex-Boards of Canada member Christ. I always liked this track and I have no idea why I didn't include this live version on the "Gone But Not Forgiven" compilation.
  • Compilation tracks:
  • 9. An Open Sky (first version) - An early version of a track that later appeared on the "Promise" album in re-recorded form. Taken from the 2002 Enraptured Records 2CD compilation "Audio Wonderland - Bedroom Ambience Volume 3". Enraptured Records, RAPTCDXL37.
  • 10. Arion 2 - Remixed version of a track from "Promise", taken from the "Flow" CD compilation in 2004. Make Mine Music, MMM005.
  • 11. At the End of the Day - A short instrumental track from the "Misplaced Pets" animal welfare benefit CD in 2004. Misplaced Music, MM015.
  • 12. Deep Sky Morning - Taken from the limited 2 x 3" CDR compilation "Blanc:Resultat" in 2005. Chat Blanc Records, CBR-13.
  • 13. Prana (Slow Burner) - From the 2009 CD compilation "MMM050". Make Mine Music, MMM050.
  • 14. Alchemical - Recorded in November 2009 for a free download compilation on the blog "Everything is Chemical", that appeared in December 2009. This may well be the last Portal track ever to be recorded.

About Portal

Portal is the name given to the recordings of Scott Sinfield. The music has included contributions from others, notably vocalist Rachel Hughes who appeared on Portal's albums between 2000 and 2005, and guitarist , who also records under the moniker . Contrary to some assertions, Portal did not disband in 2006, but rather went on sabbatical, with Scott becoming a father and concentrating on the running of the now-defunct independent label . At the end of 2009, Portal was laid to rest. Scott now records under the name.
