While the original version from the "Solitaire" album is a type of jazz ballad, this is IMHO the far superior version. The sad, slow orchestral part near the end (at 3:25) was a sheer genius act of arranging. It makes you feel the hopelessness of the person Neil is trying to encourage, while the harp shows that there is hope. And the continual repeating bars at the fade out while you hear Neil banging away at the piano in the background perfectly ends the song with an uptempo beat that shows that even as it fades away, there is hope for Neil's friend--and us, too.
One of my favorite, if not all time favorite (it's close) Neil Sedaka songs and recordings.
