MDC - Millions Of Dead Cops

Review by Michael Gaio

Millions of Dead Cops is an album that has stood the test of time. Released in 1982 by the American punk rock band MDC, it is a politically charged and socially conscious album that continues to resonate with audiences today.

The album features aggressive and fast-paced punk rock tracks that tackle issues such as police brutality, racism, and political corruption. The lyrics are raw and unapologetic, with lead singer Dave Dictor delivering them with a sense of urgency that is impossible to ignore.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "John Wayne Was a Nazi," which takes aim at the glorification of violence and racism in American culture. Another notable track is "Born to Die," which addresses the senseless violence and destruction of war.

Notes

  • This is the original mix and cover as the first, self released version of the album. Limited pressing of 75 # printed on back of jacket in red.
  • This is a reissue of the original 1982 version / first mix, with a slightly different track order on side B.
  • Printed double-sided lyric insert included.
  • Appears to have been released around the same time as this version: 'Millions Of Dead Cops'. However, there is no numbering on the back of the outer sleeve.
  • Label is misprinted and reads "PMV #44." Spine shows "PNV #44."
  • Recorded December 1981 in Houston.
  • Heavy cardboard cover with black border, with "R Radical Records 1982" mention on front, but without Ⓒ Ⓟ logos on the right.
  • No "RE-1 14161" & "RE-1 14162" etchings appear in runout areas on this version of the release, a small " ³ " is etched instead on both sides.
  • Thin, glossy printed double-sided lyric insert included.
  • Spine reads: "MDC Millions Of Dead Cops".
  • "MDC 1" catalog number from A-side center label.
  • "No war, no K.K.K. no Fascist U.S.A." etched on B-side.
  • Durations listed on A-side label.
  • "Blue by day - White by night - Stop Killer Cops!" slogan printed on B-side label.
  • Insert reads: "For additional copies, send $6.00 (postage included) to: M.D.C., 2440 16th St., Box #103, San Francisco, California 94103".
  • Ⓒ & Ⓟ All Rights Reserved 1982 (printed on A-side label, not just "All Rights Reserved").
  • Ⓒ & Ⓟ 1982 R Radical Records (printed on bottom left back cover).
  • Lyric Sheet " Special Thanks to the Dead Kennedys"
  • "Maximum thanks to Tim Yohannon"
  • Millennium Edition
  • Restored & Remastered for Digital & Vinyl at Lucky Lacquers.
  • Comes with printed inner sleeve featuring lyrics and credits.
  • First pressing with printed center labels.
  • Screen-printed heavy paste-on cardboard jacket with white border around red background and black band logo.
  • Different mix and side B track order than on the later versions.
  • Issued with double sided lyric insert.
  • Pressing Note:
  • The record plant made an error and accidentally printed covers with orange background instead of the ordered red colored one. So the band waited for the correctly printed red covers before they distributed and sold the first pressing of the record (with printed center labels) to public. The first pressing quickly sold out and the band ended up pressing more record (with plain white center labels). They used the covers with the orange background which they bought at a discount from the pressing plant and combined them with these repressed records.
  • So the first pressing of the record was actually sold in a reprinted cover.
  • Third US pressing. Heavy cardboard cover, brown-colored inside. Actual printed catalog number on label does not have a dash, but a space instead. Run out groove does have a dash. Includes lyric insert, no Remix information printed.
  • © & ℗ Alternative Tentacles
  • Pressed at MPO Averton
  • Anybody who tapes this record for their friends will be struck down by Virus 26 & die a slow painful death.
  • Front cover adapted from the original mural at the Centro Chicano, Austin, Texas, by permission of the artist, Raul Valdez.
  • Back cover drawing from the official logo and with permission of the John Brown Anti-Klan Committee, Austin, Texas.
  • Comes with a lyric-innersleeve.
  • 2019 reissue of the MDC-classic as cassette with 4c-booklet, blue tapes and trays.
  • Includes inlay with lyrics & credits.
  • German press of R. Radical version.
  • Test pressing with white labels and black vinyl, with Twisted Chords pressing info.
  • 13 copies total.
  • 2019 reissue of the MDC classic as a picture-disc with text inlay, cover sticker and digital download code.
  • Actual printed Catalog Number on label does not have a dash, but instead a space. Run out groove does have a dash.
  • Front cover with black border, black MDC, and no © and ℗.
  • Back cover strictly red, white, and black. No red in circle with klansman's cross. Remix (third pressing and on) tracklisting.
  • Lyric insert.
  • This is the original release. The record plant made an error with the orange background covers and the band had them changed to red background before records (with labels) were combined and sold to public.
  • The records quickly sold and the band ended up printing more records without labels and using the the covers with orange background.
  • Cover is screen-printed heavy paste-on cardboard jacket with white border and red background.
  • Has printed labels.
  • 2nd press records are plain white since they ran out of printed labels.
  • Comes with double-sided lyric insert.
  • 2019 reissue of the MDC-classic as a picture-disc with textinlay, coversticker and digital downloadcode.

About MDC

MDC, or Millions of Dead Cops, began in 1979 in Austin, Texas as The Stains. They released the classic "John Wayne was a Nazi" 7" in 1980, half of the pressing was under the Stains name, half "MDC-Stains". That year MDC relocated to San Francisco, following the lead of fellow leftist Texans the Dicks. Witnessing a violent police riot at their show with Flag in Orange County inspired the new name (the change was necessitated by fellow opening band the Stains from LA).

Millions of Dead Cops is a must-listen for anyone interested in punk rock or social justice. Its message is as relevant today as it was when it was first released, and its impact on the punk rock scene cannot be overstated.

Comments

True hardcore, one of the best bands!!!
This album is good, but maybe a little bit bland. The songs do start to sound the same after a while, and listening to the whole thing can be a little boring, despite how fast the band plays. That being said, the first two songs, which form the kind of medley, are really good. As is the last track, American Achievements. Definite standouts. Violent Rednecks and Born To Die are also good, with Dick For Brains and John Wayne Was A Nazi being okay . The rest of the songs all sound the same.Overall, it's alright. Band is pretty tight at least.
