Marianas Rest's latest album, Ruins, is a haunting and emotional journey through the depths of despair and loss. The Finnish band delivers a powerful blend of melodic death metal and doom that is both atmospheric and heavy.
The album opens with "Kairos", a somber instrumental that sets the tone for the rest of the record. The title track, "Ruins", is a standout with its crushing riffs and mournful melodies. Vocalist Jaakko Mäntymaa's gut-wrenching screams and clean vocals add to the emotional intensity of the song.
"South of Vostok" and "The Spiral" showcase the band's ability to create dynamic and atmospheric compositions. The latter features guest vocals from Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis, adding another layer of depth to the already powerful track.
The album closes with "Apex", a beautiful and haunting ballad that showcases Mäntymaa's clean vocals and the band's ability to create a melancholic atmosphere.
Edit: I'm just listening to their first album Horror Vacui. This is my kind of music! I wait for April still more impatiently.
And I consider moving to Finland ☺
