Singer and songwriter, born 11 September 1899 near Beech Springs, Louisiana, died 5 November 2000 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame (1972), Gospel Music Hall of Fame (1994), Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1971) and the Shreveport Walk of Stars (2002). Known as The Singing Governor, for he was a successful country & western and gospel singer as well as a politician, serving two terms as Louisiana governor (1944-1948 and 1960-1964).
