The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psycho Candy

Review by Tina Penman

Psycho Candy, the debut album by Scottish alternative rock band Jesus and Mary Chain, is a landmark release that still resonates with listeners today. Released in 1985, the album was a critical and commercial success, thanks to its unique blend of punk, noise rock, and pop sensibilities.

At its core, Psycho Candy is a collection of catchy, distorted pop songs that are both abrasive and melodic. The album's opening track, "Just Like Honey," is a perfect example of this, with its shimmering guitar riff and sweetly sung vocals juxtaposed against a wall of feedback and distortion.

Other standout tracks include "The Hardest Walk," which features a menacing bass line and haunting vocals, and "Never Understand," which is one of the album's most straightforward and upbeat tracks.

Bless young Bobby Gillespie on drums!
For me this song is the missing bridge between indie guitars bands and their industrial cousins like einsturzende neubauten, test department and even may be NIN. Absolute noise first..
I think I'm the only black man that loves this band. They are great. All that noise this guys make are wonderful. I worship this guys.
These fellas are deaf now!
Happy ??????????????????????????????✊?????????☀?????
The song that made me in love and obsessed with feedback
Psychofuckingcandy man
I love the Mary chain boys but I pains me to see a Vox phantom being buried in the sand
Epidemic
this is my favorite JMC song… i only wish there was a version without distortion so that I can listen in my car ?
I remember reading an interview with the Reid brothers where they said they used to do research on drugs before they'd take them, then take them anyway. My litmus test was to listen to Jesus And Mary Chain on drugs, and if I felt comfortable, onto to something stronger!
I saw them in 1985 in Boston. We waited for a long time in a dark room with no seats talking pretentiously with each other before they arrived about how short their sets tend to be. We wondered how short ours would be that night. They were very late and played a really loud, short set with their backs to us and it was everything we'd hoped it would be.
These are British rockers doing what British rockers do...frankly. little sleep, drug inducedcomas etc et. Et.
JAMC... 37 years old age.
Sonido demencialmente maravilloso.
Madness
When I first heard this in the 80s I treated it as a joke. The kids at school agreed. We would sing the words You Trip Me Up then make a harsh noise. Somewhere in here is a passable tune. This was a Tommyknocker warning of the coming decline in music quality
Greece, i know the place
Sounds like some gadgy wi a fuckin chainsaw an a grinder
Just after this single was released, I saw JAMC live at the Hacienda in Manchester. They played for 15 minutes of maelstrom and were gone in a puff of dry ice. The shortest gig I've ever seen. I think they probably only had 15 minutes of songs at that time. This song was magnificently ramshackle.
