Review by Ashley Pauls

Skylark, the 1978 album by jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, is a captivating and soulful masterpiece that showcases his virtuosity and musical prowess. The album features a mix of original compositions and covers, each of which is a testament to Hubbard's musicianship and creativity.

The album opens with the title track, a beautiful rendition of the classic Hoagy Carmichael tune. Hubbard's smooth and melodic trumpet playing is perfectly complemented by the lush arrangements of the backing band, which includes the likes of George Benson and Ron Carter.

Other standout tracks include the funky "Gibraltar," the upbeat and energetic "The Things We Did Last Summer," and the hauntingly beautiful "I'm Glad There Is You." Throughout the album, Hubbard's playing is both technically impressive and emotionally resonant, making for a truly unforgettable listening experience.

sigh.
The consummate ballad player - total control!

Mr. Hubbard shows all trumpet players there's more to the art of trumpet than just playing high notes . It's everything in between that counts . That's what separates a true jazz trumpet player from a regular lead trumpet player in a showband .That art of improvisation . Some musicians are born with it and others have to work on it. But that's what separates jazz from classical it's called freedom. Something African-Americans and indeginous people have been cheated of .This art form gives true spiritual freedom to those who love, play and study it .
anyone know the trumpeter?

The beginning of his solo is amazing!
One of the best jazz albums of all time.
Jazzy, thank you for posting this. It is a critical piece of music. This also tells me another story about Freddie Hubbard. Many drunk arguments I had with my father about him. I felt like Freddie underachieved. Pop said I didn't modally get Hubb. Ultimately, the old man was correct. But I put up a good enough fight to Pops's respect as a gormandizer
First time I heard this album was just before I went to Berklee School of Music....it blew me away! Musical genius and chops from here to eternity. What a musician he was. May he rest in peace.

Vintage Freddie! Superb chops -- 24 years old and playing trumpet at an extraordinary level. He wrote _Thermo_ too. RIP Mr. Hubbard.
How is this album not more talked about? What a gem!
If that doesn’t melt her in your arms nothing will
Wow!
Insanely good album, and criminally under appreciated.

Ah, Freddie Hubbard. I saw him in person and then in the greenroom with Betty Carter. They were really having a great time together.
So beautiful and wonderful?thank you??
One of my favourite jazz records of all time. It's some kind of evening mood, that was around 1955 - 1965. Round about midnight music.
Wow. That's sick. I wonder why this isn't more popular as skylark is very well known
