About For Against
For Against is one of America's most enduring and endeared independent musical ensembles, founded in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1984. The trio built the bridge between post-punk and dream pop in the mid-1980s and proceeded to record eight albums, three singles, and one EP drawing together a loyal union of darkwave fans in Europe and dream pop enthusiasts in their native U.S.

9.3 / 10 [] This is an incredible post punk album, and one of the most criminally under-appreciated. Jeffrey Runnings' lyrics are highly literate and coldly depressing. The music is largely post punk and dreamy guitar pop, and it frequently evokes feelings of coldness and isolation. The songwriting and production are very, very good and consistent throughout the album. Look no further than "the Effect," one of the most crushingly sad and mesmerizing songs ever to come out of the post punk movement. There are shades of the Chameleons on this album, however Runnings makes the album sound incredibly personal. For Against went against (no pun intended) the grain in their home country, and perhaps this is why they never received more than a cult following. I'd like to thank Allmusic for revealing this hidden gem to me, as I probably never would have heard it if I had not been made aware of it on this site.
