Review by Vahid Turke

Dexter Gordon's album "Atlanta Georgia May 5 1981" is a remarkable jazz masterpiece that captures the essence of his exceptional talent. The album features Gordon's live performance at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 5, 1981, and it showcases his virtuosity on the tenor saxophone.

The album's opening track, "Fried Bananas," sets the tone for what is to come, with Gordon's smooth, melodic playing supported by a tight rhythm section. Throughout the album, Gordon's playing is both technically impressive and emotionally engaging, with each note carrying a depth of feeling that is rare in jazz.

Gordon is joined on the album by a stellar group of musicians, including pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Rufus Reid, and drummer Eddie Gladden. Together, they create a rich, layered sound that is both complex and accessible, drawing the listener in with each new phrase.

One of the standout tracks on the album is Gordon's rendition of "Body and Soul," a classic jazz standard that he infuses with his own unique style. His playing is soulful and expressive, capturing the romanticism of the song while adding his own improvisational flourishes.
