Review by Eric Johnston

Dave Ray's album Fine Soft Land is a soulful and heartfelt collection of songs that showcase his exceptional musicianship and songwriting skills. The album features a variety of genres, including blues, folk, and country, and each track is a testament to Ray's ability to convey emotion and tell a story through his music.

From the opening track "Fine Soft Land" to the closing number "I'm Gonna Love You," Ray's voice is rich and powerful, conveying a range of emotions from joy to heartbreak. The instrumentation is equally impressive, with Ray's guitar playing and harmonica skills shining through on each track.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Mama's Cooking," a bluesy number that celebrates the joys of home cooking and family. Ray's vocals are particularly strong on this track, and the guitar work is exceptional.

So here it is...I was a graduate student at the Univ of Chicago between 1961 and '63. On Wednesdays nites, we would have dance/music jams at the Student Center. I remember that PAUL (BUTTERFIELD) was a student at the university and he and Elvin and the rest of his guys would play...every gd Wednesday. How lucky could we be...and then DAVE (RAY) a 16 yo KID showed up one nite and. a few of us listened to him singing and playing in the way only he could.. ..singing in the stairwell..The kid was a phenom. Never heard a white boy sing blues that way (except for my good friend, Danny Kalb!). I never forgot DAVE. We sure knew what we had but couldn't know where Dave and Paul and Elvin and company would go. An here I am so MANY years later(do the math). loving them still.
I feel honored and blessed to have been in at the beginning of their thrilling rides. THANK YOU,

I have this fantastic album. I heard Ray's tunes on The Blues Project compilation album and had to have it! My favorite acoustic blues album by a mile!!!
Thanks, Eileen. I've known Danny since the middle 50's-(the decade not our age!) And-ta-da!: In 1961, My family(bro, mom and dad) along with a bunch of others, spent thanksgiving night at the home of Eve and Mac (McKenzie) and their teenage son, Peter, on B'way and 22 Street where I met Bob Dylan for the first time. He was staying with the McKenzies; my brother, who was an accomplished guitarist, sat with B for a while, teaching him the chords to the Bells of Rhymney. Growing up in in New York was the best!
been a fan of this tremendous artist since '65 , he passed from this world in 2005 ,
but his music and energy will be with us forever .. thank you !
