Review by city news

Broadside Band's Popular Tunes in 17th Century England, curated by Jeremy Barlow, is a delightful album that takes listeners on a journey through the music of the era. The album features a range of instruments, including the lute, viol, and recorder, which are played expertly by the musicians.

The album is a blend of instrumental tracks and songs, with the latter featuring the beautiful voice of soprano Emily Van Evera. The songs are sung in English, and Van Evera's clear, pure voice brings out the beauty of the lyrics.

The instrumental tracks, on the other hand, showcase the virtuosity of the musicians. The pieces are lively and entertaining, and the sound is rich and full.

One of the highlights of the album is the track "Greensleeves," which is played on the lute and has a haunting quality to it. Another standout track is "La Volta," which is a lively dance that is sure to get listeners tapping their feet.

About The Broadside Band, Jeremy Barlow

Jeremy Barlow formed The Broadside Band in 1979 to perform popular and dance music from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Since then the group has made many recordings of this repertoire and has toured throughout Europe. Other CDs of Renaissance dance music include Danses populaires françaises du XVI siècle (Harmonia Mundi), English Country Dances and Songs and Dances from Shakespeare (Saydisc). For Hyperion the group expanded to a full Baroque orchestra with chorus and soloists to record The Beggars Opera (CDA66591/2), restored to its original form and based on Jeremy Barlows edition of the work for Oxford University Press. That recording won an Edison Award.
